Why in the hell is house speaker a popularity contest anyway?
And why does one person get to decide so much?
As I watch the spectacle of a small group of Republicans engaged in the rare act of fully supporting their constituents as well as the American public at large, by repeatedly refusing to vote for RINO Kevin McCarthy, I again have the question I’ve had many times before. Why is the speaker position a popularity contest?? Or probably more accurately, why is it a schmoozing/deal making/influence peddling contest??
Why isn’t the speaker’s race based on constitutional knowledge, U.S. History knowledge, intelligence, and past record of supporting the positions of the electorate for the person’s party?? Why should anyone vying for speaker, or that person’s supporters in the house, be able to promise or threaten any other member with committee leaderships/memberships or denials from those committees?? That’s the definition of corruption, so why is it done that way as part of the established process??
Just like the speaker position, committee leadership and membership should be based on knowledge, experience, intelligence, and past record of faithfully representing the voters. The speaker should NOT have any authority whatsoever to decide who gets to be on or to lead committees, nor should the speaker be able to work back door deals to grant or deny those roles. Nothing about the way the U.S. house operates should be anything like an autocracy where one person has the bulk of the power or has many times more power than other members. If this were a business or a group of businesses working this way, they would be charged with RICO crimes.
As of the time I’m typing this, RINO McCarthy is 0 for 5 in vote tries to become speaker. He even lost one more vote from round 3 due to a “present” vote from a member was voting for him in earlier rounds. To confirm my thoughts that a very large majority of R voters do NOT want McCarthy, I’ve read through a couple thousand or more comments on Twitter. You can easily do this yourself by finding absurd comments from various prominent right side people who are urging the 20 holdouts to cave in, and then looking at the replies to those comments.
It’s a long list of people taking this bizarre position, including Mark Levin and Newt Gingrich himself. Gingrich’s doing so is probably the most ridiculous, as it was exactly 24 years ago that the same type group of establishment republicans and full on RINOs conspired to stab him in the back with bogus ethics charges, in order to get him out of the speaker’s role, at which point they installed the pedophile Dennis Hastert.
Hastert had molested boys many years before he was first elected to Congress, so he got away with it for decades before his conviction in a shady plea bargain agreement in 2015, but I digress. Or maybe it’s actually relevant to show the level of criminality associated with the person who gets chosen as speaker. Nancy Pelosi is almost certainly the most corrupt of all time. Of all people, Newt Gingrich, the leader of the first radically different house in decades and different than anything since (where they actually balanced the budget), should be backing the 20 holdouts.
So you could call this another of my Solution Series. Make the speaker’s race about qualifications only, as well as basing committee roles on qualifications. Don’t give the speaker the power to do things like hiding thousands of hours of security camera footage either, in order to keep alive a bogus “insurrection” narrative and maintain a literal American Gulag. Let any member of Congress release such footage, and otherwise allow individual members or small groups of members to provide transparency in all kinds of other areas as well.
The entire country will benefit from that system.
Change my mind.
Branco’s message is a bit off, but at least he included a big RINO.
