If you’ve been around 50 years or more and pay the bills and pay attention, you’ve seen that the total tax bill for most people has increased. Now the bottom 30% to 45% in income from their own labor get various transfer payments from others, so some portion in those brackets are not paying more than they did 40 or 50 years ago even when you factor in gasoline taxes and sales taxes. The rest of us are.

Go back 50 years and look at the history of federal income taxes, state income taxes, FICA taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, and special taxes on gasoline, alcohol, tobacco products, car rentals, hotels, utilities, etc. and you’ll see that other than Reagan’s tax cuts, Trump’s tax cuts, and state level tax cuts enacted by Republicans in various non left wing states from time to time, pretty much all taxes have been increasing. And so of course the maximum total taxation rate for most people has gone up. You can also add in various licensing fees.
